EPA’s Sustainable Systems Team is offering a three-part training on CUPSS – the Check Up Program for Small Systems.  CUPSS software can help small water and wastewater systems implement asset management practices.

Each of the three 2-hour sessions will contain an overview of a CUPSS module supported by live demonstrations. Participants who complete the assignments after each session will receive a CUPSS Trainers Certificate and will be included in the CUPSS Trainers Directory

EPA Posts FY 16 RFA for Small System Training and Assistance Competitive Awards

EPA has announced the availability of $12.688 million in competitive grants to non-profit organizations to provide training and technical assistance to small public water systems, small wastewater systems and private well owners, located in urban and rural communities throughout the U.S. and its territories.

Through the RFA (Request for Applications), EPA will be able to identify eligible candidates who will use the funds to help provide water and wastewater system staff and private well owners with training and tools to enhance system operations and management practices, and support EPA’s continuing efforts to protect public health and promote sustainability in small communities.  Applications are due September 30.  You may view the RFA at Training and Technical Assistance to Improve Water Quality and Enable Small Public Water Systems to Provide Safe Drinking Water (PDF)

EPA expects to award four to nine cooperative agreements from the available amount.  Successful candidates will provide training and technical assistance to:

  • Small public water systems to achieve and maintain compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA);
  • Small public water systems on a wide range of managerial and, or financial topics to achieve and maintain compliance with the SDWA; or
  • Small publicly-owned wastewater systems, communities served by onsite-decentralized wastewater systems and private well owners to help improve water quality.

Succession Planning Webinar

How to Help with Hazard Mitigation for Small Systems

ASDWA and EPA’s Water Security Division are teaming up to present a webinar that will consider how state primacy agencies can work with both their state hazard mitigation offices and their utilities to promote, fund, and implement hazard mitigation projects.  Mitigation is important for smaller systems as it can help recurring disasters (like flooding at the treatment plant) from happening again and may provide funding to achieve the goal – a perfect example of TMF in action!

One of the five core components of Asset Management is to determine the criticality of each of your assets. This can be accomplished by completing a risk analysis. When completing the risk analysis you have to ask two questions about each asset. First, how likely is it that the asset will fail?  And second, what are the consequences if the asset does fail?  There are many things to consider when answering these two questions. This webinar includes a discussion about completing an asset risk analysis and will review a newly developed tool that can assist you in determining what factors to consider when evaluating probability of failure and consequence of failure by asset category.

 Capabilities of Biological Treatment for Drinking Water   This presentation will discuss the scientific fundamentals of biological treatment and present several case studies that serve to illustrate the capabilities of the process as well as operation and maintenance issues that need to be considered.
